Ancient Knowledge For Modern Ailments

Greetings on the eve of  “International Day of Yoga”

The theme for 2020 is "Yoga for Health - Yoga at Home"

The word yoga means union ! Said to be the union of the finite with the infinite. There is one essential diffrrence between conventional physical and yogic exercises. The former need aggressive and vigorous pace to tap the benefit while the latter need a ,composed ,calm and controlled movements to get the optimum benefits. The former act on the physical plane to a larger extent while the latter act on the emotional plane. There is a school of thought advocating therapeutic potential to certain ailments through the practice of this ancient legacy.

I believe there should be a greater thrust for a scientific research in evolving practice profiles for the curative effect for specific ailments where, things like the posture(s) to be practiced, the length of the session, number of days needed and the expected results through the relevant diagnostic tests etc are to be formulated for the optimum utility and potential benefit for the mankind .All said and done, yoga is meant to subdue animosity, aggressiveness and the like and at the same time is supposed to elevate you on an emotional plane for a better composure and comfort of the balance of mind and body and is thus the need of the hour for humanity.

Pranayama is an integral part of yoga and is aimed at controlling the vagaries of “chitta” ( the active thinking mind ).It enables one mindful of one’s own breathing- life’s most important function. Pranayama is control of breath. From the point of view of yoga, this is basically a series of exercises which helps bringing more oxygen to blood and brain. It needs to be practiced under proper guidance.
