The Joy of learning & the role of Medium

There are two things a learner must be comfortable with; the meaning ( of what is written or explained) and the concept involved. If the former is not clear, the latter can not be grasped. This is more so in subjects like basic sciences, mathematics etc.In many cases it so happens that the student is stuck at the meaning itself unable to understand what the sentence means ! The MT ( mother tongue ) is the channel through which we imitate  sounds, repeat them, frame the words, stutter sentences initially, then build up the skills to express, communicate and interact with every one we comes across ! Such is the rock bed of platform on which the edifice of learning is built.

We can not do away with English, as text books in many subjects from college level are in English and more so at higher levels in pure science and streams of applied science like engineering and medicine ! The teaching at lower levels may use English terms but medium of explanation, expression and examination  is to be through MT. Because, once the basics are understood, learning of  concepts of continuity  is easier.

I have come across several brainies in many walks, who would have done miracles in their academic or professional pursuits had they been taught in lower levels in MT and had they been equipped with better command over English.

Summary:
*Teaching and learning upto school-leaving stage  preferably  in MT,realising that grip over English is essential for success in academics and carreer, focusing on essential skills in English all through schooling, help having more number of more talented people in many walks.
This forms the roadmap for learning to be fun and frolic but not tedious and torture !

  1. I totally agree with your views in the above post. English can be learnt separately as a means of communication. Changes should be made in the curriculum to teach pure sciences in MT simultaneously with their equivalent English terms. This will not only make a huge difference in understanding and learning the subject at the school level but also helps to adapt to new medium of learning i.e. english at higher levels.
