The Dark Side of the Lockdown

News of cities and states going into lockdown again ( in many parts of the globe too ) should make us introspect ! In any crisis of such dimension, public participation is equally important.Undoubtedly, more number of tests is the need of the hour now. With air borne transmission too being almost confirmed the need for social distancing, wearing mask and frequent hand wash form the most important strategy ! No doubt, awareness through media and alerts through caller tunes on mobiles etc played an important role ! But  greater awareness explaining why caution is needed  for the safety and economy of the individuals and that of the nation too may be promoted aggressively!.

Reports from various sources indicate that the coronavirus outbreak has caused losses to the tune of about Rs.30 lakh crores to the national economy..One can guess how long it takes to make up this loss.Making up such a loss would inevitably lead to a higher cost of living, higher taxes etc and the burden gets transmitted to people only. So it is in our own interest that we follow the precautions. Our welfare is linked more than ever to the welfare of those around ! This is what the message of the leaders should contain with repetition apart from what the governments are going to do to take care of people during lockdown and to instil confidence in them !

A slogan like “ each one-monitor one” may be promoted so that if some one is found violating precautions near by, the people themselves should volunteer to educate them.Imposing fines for violation is also not bad.

  1. Hunger and poverty in the under privileged makes them throw the caution to winds.Rich but uneducated do not understand and bother. Some amount of callousness in the educated class due to long term imposition of lock downs, loss of jobs and sheer boredom...all contribute to the virus spread.Governments alone can never control such calamities.Ultimately,it is a people’s movement with involvement of social organisations ..which should do the job. What the villagers did to prevent the entry of virus into their midst should be a roll model.Easier said than done in towns and cities.Gated communities in Hyderabad are doing this to some extent.
